Ecuador Good Friday Procession. I’m not sure why they’re wearing hats made out of watermelon. Does it has some sort of special symbolism? Or is it just found materials? (via Flickr)
So I was doing some lunch paperwork yesteraday at school, and I heard a voice over the loudspeaker,
“Mr. Franklin, you have a relay call on line one, Mr. Franklin line one.”
I looked up in interested confusion at another student who met my glance with the same twisted grimace.
I walked up to the front desk and asked the seceratary, “Um, what’s a relay call?” She explained that it was a service for the hearing impaired. Basically, an operator acts as the “go between” translating my spoken response into typed word and their typed response into speech.
My first thought was that it was a forward thinking vendor who hired hearing empaired salespersons. Cool!
“Hello, this is AT&T with a relay call message for Mr. Franklin.”
“This is Mr. Franklin” I responded timidley
“This is Ben, I was with you when you got your hair cut two weeks ago. Go ahead.”
“Ben? Um. Ben who? I don’t know any Bens.”
“I was with you. Go ahead” she responded in a monotone voice.
“When I got my hair cut, it was like a month ago, and it was in my own house. ”
“I was there in a way. You are important to me. Go ahead.”
“Ben? What?…..um…..What’s the purpose of this call?”
“I just wanted to tell you that fashion is important even for someone whose lost his voice from meddling.”
At that point I started to get weirded out. I told the operator to repeat the name for me. I had thought she said a last name at the beginning of the conversation, but wasn’t quite sure. I think she thought I was a moron when I asked her to spell “Ben” for me.
“B….E….N….”
I won’t be converting catholic answers very much. Word is that they’re going to start uploading their latest broadcasts in mp3 format as well as start an rss feed for podcasting. Enjoy.
