Nice post, Alicia. I do wonder what planet these people live on. On my planet, when I try to watch a football game, I have to put up with commercials lauding a show in which 25 tramps vie for the affection of a slug dressed up as a millionaire; commercials in which two guys at a bar fantasize about a beer commercial featuring women ripping each other’s clothes and beating each other up; promos for one cynical, hyper-verbal, sex-weary situation “comedy” after another; on my planet, the popular culture can’t even produce a love song anymore; my college students are too tired and jaded even to flirt, and prefer, to dating, the frequenting of bars, where one sex is supposed to “hook up” with another — the mechanical metaphor speaks volumes; on my planet, young women now throw parties to fool around with “toys” that you used to have to go down dirty alleys to purchase … You are absolutely right, Alicia: with such people as Sipe it’s not about deep matters of doctrine but about getting laid. No one says, these days, “I have broken with the Church because I disagree with its Christology,” or “I can no longer hold with the pope’s Trinitarianism.” The disagreement is PANTOLOGICAL — they have trouble with KEEPING THEIR PANTS ON. So next time someone says, “I disagree with some of what the Church teaches,” I think I’ll answer, “Trouble with the zipper, huh?”
